When you successfully pass an official hunter education class, you receive a Hawaii hunter certification card, which allows you to purchase a Hawaii hunting license.
Letters of exemption
Letters of exemption exempt you from being required to take a Hawaii hunter education class and allow you to purchase your Hawaii hunting license directly.
- Request a replacement letter of exemption
- Apply for an in state letter of exemption . Details: I was born before 1972 and I have at one time in my life had a Hawaii hunting license, so I am eligible for an instate letter of exemption.
- Apply for an out of state letter of exemption . Details: I have an official IHEA hunter education certificate from a state (or country) other than Hawaii so I am eligible for an out of state letter of exemption.

To go hunting in Hawaii you will need a Hawaii hunting license. To get a hunting license you will need either a Hawaii hunter certification card, or a Hawaii letter of exemption.

Some permits are available by lottery only. You will need to have your hunting license by the day the hunt starts.
